The square of the cathedral of Trismartyris is a central town square where several events take place every year. The present Cathedral of the Virgin was built in place of an older temple of the Virgin, which dates from the 14th century.When Chania was occupied from the Turks in 1645, the church turned into soap factory, without changing the design at all. Until 1868 the church as soap factory, allegedly belonged to the Turkish officer Mustafa Pasha Gkiritli.Tradition says that the business of soap-factory was wrecked and abandoned, and the image of the Virgin Mary was taken by the last technician.When Mustafa became prime minister, Sultan Metzit of the Christian community, persuated Mustafa and called technicians to build the temple again. With the support of Christians and despite the problems that caused the Ottomans, the church was finally erected.The construction of the temple was completed in 1860 in the form of three-aisles basilica with elevated covered by the pointed arch nave.The aisles are covered by vaults and divide height by the women. In the Northwest corner of the temple is built in a tall tower. The architectural elements of the church connect more to the tradition that formed during the Venetian with carved pilasters, cornices, window and doors frames.
