Splantzia


Splantzia today Square 1821 was for the Turkish part of a collection as it was for Christians in Fountain. In the square stands the church of St. Nicholas.

From the first projects of the Turks in Chania, after their victory in 1645, was the conversion of churches into mosques. The church of St. Nicholas, built in 1320 as a monastery of the Order of Dominicans, turned into a barracks where he stayed the Order of the Janissaries. Parts of the temple were used for daily prayers of the Turkish soldiers and was named “Hassan Chiougkar ‘ (the mosque of the ruler-Emperor), before the honor of Sultan Ibrahim. Here they kept the sword of the Turkish dervish, who, first, entered the city, and went to church and with his sword, twisting in the four cardinal points; he was calling the faithful to pray.
